HTC and Immersive Content Society Inspire Students with Two-Day Virtual Production Workshop in Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan — The future of filmmaking was given to students in Tokyo, where the Immersive Content Society and HTC VIVE co-hosted a two-day workshop that blended technology, creativity, and hands-on production. The HTC VIVE Mars Virtual Production Workshop gathered more than 20 students from eight universities across Japan, including Takarazuka University, Musashino Art University, International Professional University of Technology in Tokyo, Tokyo Polytechnic University, Waseda University, International Christian University, Digital Hollywood University, and Zhejiang Sci-Tech University (China), while 1360 additional viewers joined via livestream.

The first day took place at International Professional University of Technology in Tokyo (IPUT), where filming, sound, and streaming were fully supported by IPUT students. After opening remarks from HTC Japan’s Fukui Tatsuro, the day’s mentors were introduced: Professor Watanabe Kenji (IPUT), Tomoyuki Nishiyama (Mirukia Inc.), Mr. Murasugi (Too Corporation), and HTC Taiwan’s Tim Wen.

Students were introduced to VIVE Mars CamTrack, HTC’s camera tracking system for real-time virtual production, and, for the first time in Japan, VIVE Mars Nova, HTC’s beta software for asset creation, keying, and compositing. Students were challenged to prompt an image from ChatGPT, which Mars Nova uses AI to convert into a 3D scene ready for filming. The exercise pushed students to think creatively but quickly demonstrated the advantages of using Mars CamTrack with Mars Nova:

  • Real-time compositing via SDI output from Nova, allowing actors to be framed instantly against their virtual sets.
  • Cinematic storytelling using the FIZTrack Lens Encoder, enabling zooms and rack focus within the scene.
  • Set extension with Mars Nova, allowing virtual shots to reach beyond the physical green screen.

Despite having no prior experience, and with just twenty minutes to plan and film, the six student teams successfully produced one-take shorts spanning genres from romance and comedy to horror and action.

The second day at NEUU shifted toward reflection and inspiration. HTC Taiwan’s Tim presented global case studies of VIVE Mars, while Studio Bros’ Mr. Kaneko presented case studies of virtual production. Then Mr. Lee from Spice introduced students to markerless motion capture with the new VIVE Tracker.

The highlight came in the afternoon, when teams screened their projects with added sound effects and music. Mentors provided constructive feedback, encouraging students to consider how they might refine their work with more time. For many, this was the first time they saw their creative instincts translated so quickly into finished productions.

The workshop closed with snacks, conversation, and a career Q&A, leaving students with new technical skills and a clear view of the opportunities ahead.

Together, Mars CamTrack and Mars Nova create a turnkey teaching solution, giving students immediate, hands-on access to the same creative tools used in today’s media industry. For educators, this pairing offers a straightforward way to bring complex media workflows into an accessible learning environment.
